An
Open Letter from AMC's Jean-Paul DeSartre
__________________________________________________________

With
recent developments in the internet radio industry, most
notably the RIAA / SoundExchange copyright fee ruling, so obviously
designed and orchestrated by the 'Big Five' labels to
put their competition (smaller independent labels...) out of
business. The goal from day one has been to remove these
internet radio stations by raising the
copyright fees they must pay to such an extent that it
makes it impossible for them to continue. Small
internet-based stations provide the only on-air venue
independent labels and their artists have at their
disposal to promote their products.
No rational, thinking person could possibly buy into the
RIAA / SoundExchange argument that this action is GOOD
FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY! Good for them and their
self-serving agenda... Yes! But for the wider music
industry as a whole ... NOT A CHANCE!!
By removing these fertile breeding grounds for new
talent, they are ultimately cutting their own throats...
The sad thing is, they will NEVER see this. The
corporate 'greedhead' mentality that evolved in the
1980's and 90's (destroying much of the rich rock music
culture that evolved during the 70's, arguably the most
artistically diverse period in the history of music on this
planet!) is about one thing ... MONEY! Granted
that making money and art are not mutally exclusive
concepts, but let's be realistic... nothing they do is
about ART!
Case in point... their on-going support of rap and the
destructive culture it promotes... As long as their
fiscal agendas are maintained and the accountants
continue to return with brief cases full of cash,
they couldn't care less about what happens to the
fabric of American society... Unfortunately, they have
allowed this 'toxic waste' to spill out beyond their
borders and have subsequently polluted the ENTIRE
PLANET!
A hundred years from now people will listen to albums
like YES' "Close To The Edge", GENESIS'
"Selling England By The Pound" or JETHRO TULL's "Thick
As A Brick" (possibly in formats not yet envisioned...)
and speak in hushed tones of the art and vision of this
'golden age' of music. No one will remember or care
(other than perhaps the odd historian...) that decades
of creative thought were stifled and lost by a few
greedy bastards in suits that did their best to scorch
the forest so as to keep the 'small trees' from
spoiling their view... |
